Borders
2018
42 x 29.7 cm, Ink on Paper
Borders was the result of my early attempts to research queer history in Singapore. This work highlights the Tanjong Rhu incident in 1993, which involved twelve men being arrested and shamed in the media—one of the more publicly known police raids on gay cruisers. As I struggled to process this instance of state-endorsed homophobia, I began to wonder about other incidences of queer trauma from which our local community has silently suffered. How do we acknowledge our history and adversaries, work through grief and start the journey of healing together? This is a question I have been deeply invested in.
